Step 5: Where can you go for foreclosure help?


You don’t have to approach this problem alone. You can get help. Warning: Please see our step on how to avoid scams before you pay anyone money or sign anything. 

There are a lot of free resources available to help you during this difficult time. You can contact a non-profit credit counseling agency that can help for free or for a very low cost. They will provide many services to you, including: 

  • Explanation of local laws (without giving you legal advice) 

  • Review your financial situation 

  • Discussing the options that may me available to you 

  • Talk with your lender on your behalf 

  • Help you develop a plan to eliminate future credit problems 

  • Assist you in locating other resources to help on related issues ranging from legal help to medical/prescription assistance to financial aid 

To contact a legitimate low cost counseling service the best place to start is the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). They will be able to put you in contact with an agency in your local area.
